Lincoln policeman faces charge of simple assault
CUMBERLAND -- A Lincoln police officer has been charged with a misdemeanor charge of assault for allegedly pushing a man after arguing with him while off duty.

Cumberland police charged Edward M. Krawetz, 36, a Lincoln patrolman for four years, with simple assault on Monday. The incident allegedly happened on May 31, accord to Cumberland Police Capt. Ralph Liguori.

Krawetz pleaded not guilty, and a bail commissioner released him on $500 personal recognizance.

Krawetz got into the argument about 8 p.m. on May 31, after he encountered a group of joggers while he drove on Martin Street, the police said.

Krawetz pulled over and began arguing with the joggers about how they were running in the street, Liguori said. At some point, Krawetz allegedly pushed a man, Christopher C. Magill.

The police were called and went to the scene, but the joggers left soon after, Liguori said.

Later that evening, someone called the police on behalf of the joggers to say that they wanted to press charges. Detectives then interviewed the people involved and decided to charge Krawetz.

Cumberland police contacted Krawetz on Monday and told him he would be charged. He turned himself in, Liguori said.

Lincoln Police Chief William Strain said he will wait to see if Krawetz is convicted before considering disciplinary action against him.

Krawetz's lawyer, Scott Partington, said he did not want to comment on the case, except that "we maintain our innocence completely."
